AnswerMonk — AI Search Visibility Platform

What is AI share of voice?

AI share of voice is the percentage of AI-generated answers in a category that name your brand: if assistants answer 100 buyer questions about your market and your brand appears in 24 of those answers, your AI share of voice is 24%. It is the AI-era counterpart to search share of voice, measured inside answers instead of on results pages.

How it differs from search rankings

Search visibility is positional — you can rank third and still be seen. AI share of voice is binary per answer: your brand is either named in the response or it is invisible, and there is no page two. An assistant typically names a handful of brands and the buyer reads no further, so the gap between being in and out of the answer is the entire outcome.

Why it varies by engine

Engines disagree more than most teams expect. In our 300-probe phrasing study, two engine presets agreed on category winners only 22% of the time. A brand can lead on Perplexity and be absent from Gemini, because each engine has its own index, retrieval behavior, and training data. Share of voice is only meaningful when measured per engine, not as one blended number.

How it's measured

The standard method is a prompt panel: a set of realistic buyer questions for the category, run across the major engines, with every answer recorded and brand mentions counted. One-off spot checks are noise — a single prompt on a single engine can flatter or bury any brand. Panels produce a rate you can track over time and compare against competitors.

Appearance rate: AnswerMonk's implementation

AnswerMonk reports AI share of voice as appearance rate — the share of category buyer prompts in which your brand appears, measured across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. A free audit at answermonk.ai — no signup, 3-8 minutes — generates the buyer prompts for your category, runs them across all four engines, and returns your appearance rate alongside a competitor leaderboard and per-engine leader comparisons. The full method is on the methodology page, with public examples at /reports.

Frequently asked questions

How is AI share of voice different from Google rankings?

Google rankings are positional; you can rank fifth and still get traffic. AI share of voice is binary per answer: your brand is named in the response or it does not exist for that buyer. It is reported as a rate across many prompts rather than as a position.

Why is my AI share of voice different on ChatGPT and Gemini?

Each engine has its own index, retrieval behavior, and training data, so they disagree often. In our 300-probe phrasing study, two engine presets agreed on category winners only 22% of the time. Measure per engine and prioritize the ones your buyers actually use.

How does AnswerMonk measure AI share of voice?

AnswerMonk reports it as appearance rate: the share of category buyer prompts in which your brand is named. Each audit runs a generated prompt panel across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity and records every answer. The free audit takes 3-8 minutes with no signup.

Can my AI share of voice be zero even if I rank well on Google?

Yes. Rankings and answer mentions are weakly connected — industry analyses find roughly 90% of pages ChatGPT cites rank on Google page 3 or beyond. A brand can hold page-one rankings and still never be named in AI answers, which is why the two need separate measurement.
