How to get your B2B SaaS recommended by ChatGPT: a 90-day playbook

TL;DR
  • Days 1-30: plumbing. Baseline with a free audit, verify Bing indexation (~87% of ChatGPT Search citations align with Bing's top organic results, per Seer Interactive), and complete your G2 and Capterra profiles.
  • Days 31-60: extractable pages. In our crawl of pages that win AI citations, FAQ blocks were more common among cited pages, and question-form headings roughly 2x.
  • Days 61-90: mentions engine. Ahrefs' 75,000-brand analysis found branded mentions correlate 0.664 with AI visibility vs 0.218 for backlinks, and Muck Rack found 84% of AI citations come from earned media.
  • Ship volume, not a hero page. In Semrush's 81-page test, 42% of new pages were cited by ChatGPT within 30 days — and the rest mostly never were.

You get your B2B SaaS recommended by ChatGPT by doing three things in order: make your product findable to the systems engines actually retrieve from (Bing, G2, Capterra), publish pages that answer your buyer's literal questions in extractable form, and build a steady stream of branded mentions on sites the engines trust. That is the whole playbook. The rest of this article turns it into 90 days of specific work, starting with a baseline you can get today from our free AI visibility audit.

We wrote this because the advice ChatGPT itself gives on the topic is thin. When we probed getting-recommended questions across three engines in July 2026, no vendor owned a single answer and the citations pointed at hobby blogs. The playbook below is what those answers should have said.

What actually determines whether ChatGPT recommends your SaaS?

Two things: what the model already believes about your category, and what it retrieves when it decides to search the live web. Almost one in three AI answers (30.1% of our 2,994 July 2026 probes) never consults the live web — so target the questions that trigger retrieval. For those answers, your only lever is having been mentioned often enough, in consistent enough language, that the model absorbed your brand before you ever showed up.

The other roughly seven answers in ten involve retrieval, and retrieval has plumbing you can inspect. Seer Interactive measured the dependency directly: about nine in ten ChatGPT Search citations (~87%) line up with Bing's top organic results. If Bing has not indexed your comparison page, ChatGPT effectively cannot cite it, no matter how good the page is.

Question wording decides which pipeline fires. We saw this most starkly in local categories in our July 2026 probe run: identical vet-clinic questions about Toronto got memory-only answers 81% of the time when the question omitted the city name, and 0% of the time when it included "Toronto" — every answer retrieved and cited live sources. B2B software questions tend to be specific in the same way. Buyers name their stack, their team size, their compliance constraint. Specific questions trigger retrieval, and retrieval is the pipeline you can realistically win in 90 days.

Days 1-30: what should you fix first?

Baseline your visibility, get indexed where the engines actually look, claim your review-platform profiles, and lock a single description of what you do. None of this is glamorous. All of it gates everything that comes after.

How do you baseline your current AI visibility?

Measure before you change anything. The free audit takes your URL, no signup, and returns results in 3-8 minutes: it generates the buyer prompts in your category, runs them on ChatGPT across three search modes, and gives you an appearance rate, a competitor leaderboard, and a breakdown of which sources the answers cited. Write those numbers down — day 90 is meaningless without day 1.

One warning from our own data: do not baseline from a single answer. In our 300-probe phrasing study, the same question through two different presets produced the same winner only 22% of the time. A one-answer snapshot can flatter you or bury you. You can see what full before/after runs look like on our public reports page, and if you want to compare measurement options more broadly, we keep a roundup of AI visibility tools current.

Why does Bing Webmaster Tools come before content?

Because of the 87% figure above. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and confirm that your homepage, pricing page, and any comparison pages are actually indexed. Check for stray noindex tags and robots.txt rules that block Bingbot. This is a day of work, and it is the single cheapest fix in this playbook: no amount of content quality compensates for a page the retrieval layer cannot see.

Do G2 and Capterra profiles really matter for ChatGPT?

Yes, and we can be blunt about why: in our July 2026 live probes, G2 and Capterra were recommended in nearly every answer about getting mentioned by ChatGPT. The engines literally tell buyers to go check them. If the trail an engine sends your buyer down leads to a bare or outdated profile, you lose the recommendation at the last step. Complete the profile, get your category placement right, and ask a handful of recent customers for reviews. Our unmeasured rule of thumb: prioritize recency over volume — a profile with a steady stream of recent reviews reads as alive, and an engine describing your product has more current material to draw on.

What is an entity one-liner, and why does consistency matter?

An entity one-liner is one canonical sentence: "[Product] is a [category] for [specific buyer] that [concrete differentiator]." Put the same sentence — not a creative variant — on your homepage, your G2 and Capterra profiles, your LinkedIn page, your Crunchbase entry, and your docs. This is a reasoning-based recommendation rather than a measured one, but the logic is straightforward: models reconcile descriptions of your company across every source they see, and five conflicting self-descriptions blur the entity where one repeated sentence sharpens it. It costs an afternoon.

Days 31-60: which pages do AI engines actually cite?

Pages that answer a buyer's literal question in the first sentence under a question-shaped heading — and above all, comparison and alternatives pages. Listicles take roughly 41% of commercial-intent AI citations (industry citation analyses). If you do not have a "[Category] tools compared" page and a "[Biggest competitor] alternatives" page, someone else's version of those pages is answering your buyers right now.

Structure is not decoration; it is measurably what gets lifted. In our crawl of pages that win AI citations, pages with FAQ blocks were more common among cited pages, pages served with and question-form headings roughly 2x. The pattern behind all three is the same: engines extract passages, not pages. A heading that states the buyer's question, followed by a first sentence that answers it completely, is a passage an engine can lift without cleanup. A heading like "Empowering modern teams" is not.

So write for the buyer's literal question, not for keywords. Your buyers do not ask "best workflow automation software"; they ask "what should a 40-person agency use to automate client onboarding without hiring a developer?" Answer that exact question, constraints and all. Then add a real FAQ section — an hour of work, and FAQ sections show up disproportionately among winners in our crawl.

Here is the part that should change how you plan: size is not the gate. Industry analyses find that ~90% of pages ChatGPT cites rank on Google page 3 or beyond (position 21+) — domain authority is not what decides citation. We see the same thing in our own probes: a Dubai fintech startup (Pemo) appeared in 83% of corporate-card answers, ahead of major banks like Emirates NBD. A startup out-appeared institutions with vastly larger marketing budgets — the appearance data doesn't tell us exactly why, but it demolishes the assumption that incumbency decides the answer.

And your own site counts as a source. In our 200-probe Dubai dental set, engines averaged 11.8 citations per answer, and the most-cited sources were the clinics' own websites — not health portals. Different vertical, but a telling precedent: engines can and do cite vendor sites directly, so do not write your own pages off as un-citable. If you sell into one country or region, the specificity dynamics above likely work in your favor; we covered the local dynamics in our regional SaaS guide.

Days 61-90: how do you get mentioned in the places engines trust?

Shift effort off your own domain and onto other people's. In Ahrefs' 75,000-brand dataset, branded mentions predict AI visibility three times as strongly as backlinks (0.664 versus 0.218), with YouTube the single strongest channel at roughly 0.737. Muck Rack's citation research found 84% of AI citations come from earned media. Read those two findings together and the conclusion is uncomfortable for anyone with an SEO-shaped backlog: a named mention in a niche publication now beats an anchor-text link, and most of what engines cite is coverage you earned rather than pages you own.

Practically, days 61-90 look like outreach. Pitch the two or three newsletters and podcasts your buyers actually read — in B2B niches these often have small audiences and reply to founders. Ask the authors of existing "best [category] tools" listicles to evaluate you for inclusion; the 41% commercial-citation share makes those pages disproportionately valuable real estate. And get at least one substantive YouTube presence: a third-party review or a genuinely useful walkthrough, given that YouTube is the strongest single signal in the Ahrefs data.

Perplexity deserves its own line: industry citation analyses put Reddit at roughly 20-24% of Perplexity's citations. That means honest participation in the subreddits where your buyers compare tools can surface you in answers your website never could. Answer as yourself, disclose who you are, and be useful even when the honest answer is "we're not the right fit for that." Astroturfed threads get flagged by communities, and a flagged thread attached to your brand name is worse than absence.

This is the phase where GEO diverges hardest from classic SEO — different signals, different targets, different failure modes. If your team still plans these as one discipline, our GEO vs SEO breakdown is the argument for splitting them.

How fast should you expect ChatGPT to pick you up?

Some pages get cited within a month; many never do — so plan for volume, not a hero page. Semrush's September 2025 longitudinal test published 81 new pages and tracked them for 30 days: 42% were cited by ChatGPT within 30 days, and the rest mostly never were; Google AI Mode cited 36% on day one. That is one month of data, so treat it as directional. But the shape of the result is the strategy: citation is fast-or-never far more often than it is slow-and-steady.

The operational consequence: ship eight to twelve focused answer pages in days 31-60 rather than polishing one flagship for a quarter. Re-run your audit around day 45 and day 90, see which pages the engines picked up, then refresh and expand the winners and rewrite the ignored ones against a different literal question. Iteration against measurement is the whole game here.

Our probe data shows upstarts genuinely can out-appear giants — Pemo showed up in 83% of Dubai corporate-card answers, ahead of major banks — and ninety days is enough to ship every input in this playbook. What we cannot yet promise is your timeline; that is what the day-1/day-45/day-90 audits are for. — but it is not enough to declare the job done. Engines re-answer every buyer question every day, and a competitor who keeps shipping mentions and answer pages will quietly reclaim the recommendation you stopped defending. Get your day-1 number first. Everything else in this playbook is measured against it.

A correction on llms.txt: earlier versions of this article listed llms.txt as an on-page lever, on the basis that it appeared disproportionately on citation-winning pages in our own crawl. That is a correlation, not a cause. Log-based and controlled evidence since — Ahrefs across 137,210 domains found 97% of llms.txt files were never fetched by anything, and Google states no AI system uses them — indicates the file itself does nothing. We removed the claim. Structure the model can actually read (clear headings, FAQ sections, tables) is the part that holds up.

Where these numbers come from: first-party figures in this article come from AnswerMonk's own studies — the July 2026 fan-out capture (24 buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini; 893 citations, 806 resolvable, 547 titled), the 21 July 2026 calibration (40 probes, 875 citations), the 2,994-probe study across 19 categories, the 300-probe phrasing study, and city-level probes such as the Chicago and Dubai runs. Each is dated and described, with its sample size and limits, on our methodology page. City-level runs are single-city, single-window samples: treat them as indicative of a pattern, not as population estimates.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a G2 or Capterra profile before ChatGPT will recommend my SaaS?

You do not strictly need one, but the engines push buyers there constantly: in our July 2026 live probes, G2 and Capterra were recommended in nearly every answer about getting mentioned by ChatGPT. A complete profile with recent reviews means the trail the engine sends buyers down actually leads to you. It is roughly a day of work, which is why we put it in days 1-30 of the playbook.

Why does Bing matter for ChatGPT recommendations when everyone optimizes for Google?

Roughly 87% of ChatGPT Search citations line up with Bing's top organic results in Seer Interactive's analysis. If Bing has not indexed a page, ChatGPT effectively cannot cite it during retrieval. Verifying your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and confirming your key pages are indexed is one of the fastest wins in the whole playbook.

Do backlinks still matter for AI visibility in ChatGPT and Perplexity?

Less than most SEO playbooks assume. In the Ahrefs 75,000-brand dataset, a branded mention predicts AI-era visibility about three times as strongly as a backlink (0.664 versus 0.218), with YouTube the strongest single channel (~0.737). Links are not worthless, but if you must choose, a named mention in a publication your buyers trust beats an anchor-text link.

How long does it take ChatGPT to start citing a new page?

Semrush's September 2025 test of 81 new pages found 42% were cited by ChatGPT within 30 days, and the rest mostly never were; Google AI Mode cited 36% on day one. That is one month of data, so treat it as directional. The practical takeaway is to publish several focused pages and iterate on the ones that get picked up, rather than betting everything on one.

Is Reddit really worth the effort for Perplexity visibility?

For Perplexity specifically, yes: industry citation analyses put Reddit at roughly 20-24% of Perplexity's citations. Genuine participation in the subreddits where your buyers compare tools can surface you in answers your website never could. Answer as yourself and disclose who you are, because astroturfed threads get flagged by communities and do lasting damage to the brand.
